PROTEIN MODELING - Division C

Students will use computer visualization to guide them in constructing physical models of proteins and in understanding how the structure of the protein determines the function.

Added 02/13/12 Coaches make sure that the students have read and reviewed the following website and three Power Points:
The Molecular Story of XIAP
Protein Modeling Workshop November 12, 2011
Protein Modeling, Nuts & Bolts of Protein Modeling, December 10, 2011
Protein Modeling, Mastering the Protein Modeling C Event, January 7, 2012

Added 01/26/12 Information from the Coaches & Event Captain Meeting Jan. 25, 2012
2 parts of event only, no prebuilt models
Onsite model:  build protein XIAP which has many amino acids
Event captain will provide laptop, software (check website), and all event materials
Written test:  list of topics on website, 20-25 questions and 1 written answer for tie breaker
After scoring is over, you may pick up and keep your model.
The event captain will offer a workshop for prebuilt models for schools going to the State Competition.

Added 01/08/12 January 7th Protein Modeling Workshop Powerpoint.

Added 01/06/12 There is a workshop this weekend:
Mastering the Protein Modeling C Event
Saturday, January 7, 2012 San Diego Supercomputer Center/UCSD, 2:00 – 4:00 pm
Introduction to the on-site model.
Advanced hands-on protein visualization and model building at computer lab.
In-depth review of the biological concepts related to this event.
Click here for directions to the workshop.

Added 12/13/11 Students should use Jmol in the Pre-Build Competition environment to figure out the boundaries of alpha helices and beta sheets.  We are not using pre-built models as part of our Regional Competition, but the event captain encourages students to build some as part of their learning process.

Added 12/12/11 From the Nuts & Bolts Protein Modeling workshop December 10th Protein Modeling Handout

Added 11/17/11 Official Rule Clarification: (10/18/11): the pdb for Regionals should read1i3o.pdb (the letter "o", and not the number zero).

Add 11/12/11 Protein Modeling Handout from the Event Captain

Added 11/06/11 Protein Modeling UCSD WorkshopsInformation

Added 10/27/11: Two Workshops at UCSD on Saturday December, 10th 2-4 p.m. and
Saturday January, 7th, 2-4 p.m.
