This event will test student knowledge of North American trees that are on the Official National Tree List.
Added 02/15/12 We will be testing only on the Regional Trees List (and not on the National List.)
Question: What is the number of needles in Torrey Pines?
Answer: The Torrey pine is a 5 needle pine.

Question: What types of books are encompassed by the phrase "field guide"? In other
words, must a book have the words "field guide" printed on the cover in
order to be permissible for the event?
Answer: A published or commercially published field guide is any printed resource
that is published and used for identifying natural objects, flora, or fauna.
Question: The Chinkapin Oak: the name on the official list is Quercus muhlenbergii. However every source I can find including the Audubon guides has the name as Quercus Muehlenbergii.

Answer: Quercus Muehlenbergii is the correct spelling for Chinkapin Oak. This correction has been made to the Official Tree List posted on the National Website. Please be sure you are using the corrected version of the tree list.

Each TEAM may bring one 8.5" x 11" page of notes. The notes may be on both sides of that page.
Each TEAM may bring up to two (0, 1, or 2) commercially published field guides. The students may have tabs in the field guide(s). Each tab is limited to three words. They may also write on the pages of the field guide(s).
Each TEAM may bring one copy of the San Diego County Regional Tree List. The tree list must be in the form in which it was sent to the coaches. The font is 11 point Calibri. Do not change the font size or style. Students may make notes on the front of the Tree List pages. They may NOT make notes on the back of the Tree List pages.

Q. What counts as a field guide?
A. A published or commercially published field guide is any printed resource

A. No you are not allowed to make digital modifications to the tree list but you are allowed to write on the tree list.
