TOWERS - Division B

Team members design and build the most efficient tower.

Observers are allowed to watch this event. Observers may not approach or speak to participants while they are competing.

No coaching is allowed.  Any observer who interferes or becomes loud will be asked to leave.

You may photograph or record only devices from your child’s school.  You may photograph or record only your own child or, with advance written permission given to the head coach, children from your child’s school.
These restrictions also apply to students photographing and recording other students or devices.

EACH device MUST have the school name and the team name written permanently on the device.

Added 01/26/12 Revised Score Sheet. Our event captains will give the students 15.0 Kg weight for their bridges, not 15.0 – 15.2 Kg.
The tower is allowed to deflect onto the chain as long as the tower is not otherwise failing.

Added 01/10/12 1.  The event captain will provide cans to scoop the sand, but he will also allow teams to use their own scoops if they like. One or two teams usually do this each year.

2.  The surface of the table on which the base of the tower will rest is melamine from Home Depot (3/16" thick if I recall correctly). It is a white surface particle board and is pretty smooth.

Added 11/18/11 Students should check their towers against the Towers B score sheet to make sure that they have met all of the construction criteria and will meet all of the Competition parameters.

Added 10/31/11: from the Regional Director
National Rule Clarifications Towers B/C (10/17/11): Add one line, "6.c.iv. The tower height is measured to the highest tower point on which the bottom of the loading block rests."
After much discussion, I have arrived at the summary below.
1. For 2012 "tower height" should be called "the base of the loading block height", and the base of the loading block height must be ≥ 40 cm.
2. Any tower with a base of the loading block > 70 cm is scored as 70 cm.
3. The highest point of the tower structure is irrelevant since the height measurement is to the base of the loading block.

Added 09/21/11 - Build Events - from the Regional Director
