What you Need to Know

Arrival/Registration - Please be sure to tell your students and their parents to get to the Competition on February 20, 2010 no later than 7:15am if they have an event at 8:00am or an impound.

Students need to have plenty of time to find the head coach so that they get their wrist bands as they will NOT be allowed to compete without wrist bands. The head coaches will get the wrist bands when they come to the Registration tables after 7:00am.

At Registration the coaches will be asked to tell us the location of their school headquarters on the map of Rancho Bernardo High School so that we can direct lost people there. Also at Registration, the coaches will hand over the completed lists of their team(s) and the team members. Head coaches got 1 team list sheet / team in their packets at the meeting Wednesday.

Required/Allowed Lists - Click here for a complete list of what is required and/or allowed for each event. It is a compilation of the items listed in the event descriptions in the Rules Manual. This list is one way for you to get organized for all of the materials your students will need for their events.

At the end of the list, is the goggle information from the National SO website. The goggles that students need for this year's Competitions are #s 2, 4, and 5. I don't think that you need to get separate goggles for #2. #2 requires side shields, and #4 has side shields that "seal tightly to the face", so you can wear #4 goggles when #2 are required. #5 goggles have side shields. #5 spectacles may not have side shields. Therefore #5 goggles - with side shields - will be OK for events requiring #2. And.... if your #5 high impact goggles seal tightly to the face, you can use them in events calling for #4.

Impounds - When an event has an Impounded device, the students must impound at the same time all allowed materials that they will require to run and fix the device. See below for specific information on required impound times, impounds are taken in the room which event is run:
7:30 - 8:15 AM - Battery Buggy, Physical Science Lab, Trajectory - device + graphs
7:15 - 7:45 - Impound - Junkyard Challenge (this event starts at 8am for all teams)

Concerning Goggles - If your kids are having problems with their goggles fogging up, you might want to get some defogger that is used for ski goggles at a sporting goods store. If they get to a point in an event when they can't see through their goggles, tell them to go to the event captain and ask permission to take the goggles off to clean them. Tell the kids not to take the goggles off on their own because they will be disqualified from events that require goggles.

Notes for Events - When an event allows students to bring a page of notes, those notes can be from any source - internet, type-written, computer generated, hand written - whatever. Usually, the events that allow notes specify ONE page of notes per TEAM. It can be double-sided, but there should be only one page of notes for each team. Read the event descriptions CAREFULLY to check what the students are allowed to take to the events.

Some events allow students to bring one page of notes/team. Some event descriptions specify that the notes may be from any source in any form. They do NOT need to be hand-written. That was left over from last year. Read the event descriptions carefully if you are not sure about what is allowed for an event, please ask.
